written for Mia Lacaze

premiere TBD

Sequenza I is an ode to Luciano Berio's collection of pieces sharing the same name. Unlike Berio's Sequenzas, Sequenza I is paired with an adaptive, machine-learned program. Sequenza I is the first of a series of solo pieces written to be accompanied by this program.

Because Sequenza I operates with a machine-learned program, the performer needs to provide the training data for the model. After downloading the proper contents of the program or meeting with the composer, the performer should play through the piece and highlight sections that they are fond of. The performer will have free reign over the types of sounds being produced by the program and where they should correlate in the piece. Emphasizing certain sections over others will cause more of said section's programmed output to become present throughout the rest of the piece.
